Opening Day 2006
I went to Shea Stadium on Monday to celebrate my favorite holiday of the year: Opening Day. It was cold, I had to pay thirteen dollars to park a mile and a half away from the stadium, and my seats were not the best, but I still had a blast at the game that had everything.
First of all, I went with my dad who maybe the second greatest Mets fan behind me. He went to Game 5 of the 1969 World Series at Shea to watch Jerry Koosman lead the Miracle Mets to the victory. His dad was a New York City cop so he was able to sneak in a lot through family friends. It was such an American activity: going to a ball game with your father.
The game itself was terrific. Tom Glavine pitched an absolute gem and was in a lot of tight spots due to factors outside of his control. David Wright hit an absolute lazer over the right-centerfield wall. Even though I found out Paul Lo Duca dropped it, Cliff Floyd and Jose Reyes' relay throws to home were perfect. Billy Wagner was hittable, but he still got the win. Overall, a solid ball game.
The place was packed to capacity and from what I have read, it was the most crowded Opening Day ever at Shea. I noticed because I had no control over my arm-rest for the first time at she in years. Usually, I can lay across rows, but the fans turned out. Of course, I was two rows behind the four drunk college guys who after every Washington National was announced, they would scream out "F*** you (insert player's name)" and would think it was freshly hysterical every time.
Good Things:
-Wright's homerun
-Xavier Nady's 4 for 4 day
-Floyd's throw to Reyes to Lo Duca
-Glavine's solid pitching
-Lo Duca's contact hitting
Bad Things:
-Wagner was hitable and not overwhelming
-Carlos Beltran looked confused at the plate
-The parking situation was atrocious
